The hand crafted, Oaxacan pottery of Mariana Fabian Pedro with her trademark little footprints are
something to see. Come by and see the Barro Negro of Oaxaca, the Black Pottery of Oaxaca ...
Located
in southern Mexico, Oaxaca is the home of artists who have
learned the pottery making process which has been passed
from generation to generation. The pottery is made by hand
(no potter's wheel is used) and decorated with simple
tools.
The Process The special clay is mined locally,
made into mud then the pieces are formed and decorated.
The pieces are then fired for hours covered by broken clay
which holds in the heat and resulting in the black color
that is characteristic of Oaxacan pottery.
Oaxacan Pottery Color
This process, however, leaves the pottery porous and
therefore unusable for practically anything but decorative
purposes. The black pottery of Oaxaca has a satiny sheen,
sometimes with a silvery luster.
Oaxacan Uses
Oaxacan pottery is not recommended for serving food. The
clay would require a much longer firing period (resulting
in a paler color) for the vessel to be able to hold water
without cracking.
